One of the most tragic events of this war has been the attack on a school in Iran that resulted in the deaths of approximately 150 schoolgirls. This devastating incident has been massively publicized within Iran and has caused enormous grief to the families involved, as it should. However, it has been appallingly under-reported in the West.Initial reports suggested the school was hit by an Iranian air defense missile, but CNN now reports that the missile was launched either by Israel or the United States, targeting a nearby Iranian military base but going astray. While I cannot imagine that whoever fired this missile intended to strike the school and kill those children, this tragedy is also a product of the surprise attack launched on Iran.The Iranians were given no previous warning that an attack was coming. They therefore could not take precautions they might have taken if warned - such as evacuating schools or issuing widespread alerts. This reflects the extraordinarily cynical and lawless way this entire operation has been conducted.There was no referral to the UN Security Council of any alleged preemptive threat from Iran. Some American officials briefed media about anticipating a preemptive Iranian attack, but I don't believe this, and other media outlets consulting Pentagon officials have been told the Pentagon had no information suggesting such a threat existed. Had there been genuine risk of Iranian attack, the correct procedure would have been seeking UN Security Council authority.The UN Charter is absolutely clear: countries that have been attacked or expect to be attacked must take the matter to the Security Council as soon as possible. The United States and Israel have done no such thing. The attack on Iran was reported to the Security Council not by the attackers, but by Iran, China, and Russia.
